Bill Haley became interested in basketry in 1985 and he and his wife Candy have taught many basket workshops over the years. In this workshop, you will create a basket in the “Appalachian egg basket” style using wisteria, privet and kudzu. Bill will supply all basketry materials you’ll need. He will provide hand-held pruning shears you can use, but you are welcome to bring a small pair of clippers if you wish. All participants will leave with a unique creation.
About the Teacher
Bill Haley has been employed in the Education Department of the Tennessee Aquarium for over 23 years, and is known to thousands of school children as “Mr. Bill”. His distinctive Sun Circles baskets have become well-known in the Chattanooga area, and are a true product of southeast Tennessee. Shunning store-bought materials he chooses to gather his own materials. Where others see an unruly and overgrown vacant lot, Bill forages with an artist’s eye. He searches for and carefully selects and prepares twigs and vines from what he terms the “urban wilderness” within and around Chattanooga, Tennessee. His choice of materials reflects what is available to the modern 21st century basket artist, and is dominated by non-native and invasive species such as kudzu, wisteria, privet, Japanese honeysuckle, and much more. No two of his enduring creations are ever exactly alike.
